Cement Siding Can Be The Answer

One of the most pressing things for many people who own their own home is the need to keep the property in good shape, especially if they live in a part of the world with inclement weather conditions, and where the winter can often bring heavy rain, high winds, and even snow and ice. It is essential to protect the structure of the house, and for this reason many people decide to install cement board siding, since this has extreme protective qualities and can last for many years without the need to carry out extensive maintenance. This article will take a look at some of the considerations that need to be borne in mind before choosing this kind of siding for your particular property.

One of the first things that needs to be decided upon is whether you choose pre-stained cement siding or whether you will choose untreated siding that will need to be painted later. Of course it is possible to change the color of the siding later on, though many people decide to go with the pre-stained option so that the siding will become operational and does its job as soon as it is installed.

In order to install the siding properly it is essential to have a hangar fitted, and use a proper cutter to ensure that the siding panels fit properly and are off the correct width in order to protect the structure. Leaking siding can be a real problem and it is therefore essential that the installation is done perfectly, and this includes installing a backer board so that there is a second layer of protection, which will go a long way toward keeping out the weather and making sure the interior structure remains dry.

Vinyl covering

With some cement board siding types it is possible to use a vinyl covering so that there is an extra layer of protection above the siding itself, something which is very important in order to make sure that the exterior is as well protected from the weather as it is possible to be. Some kind of fiber material can also be used on the exterior, and you should also take a look at making sure, especially if a professional contractor is used, that the siding caulking is done to a high standard.

When it comes to the look of the siding itself, many people decide that they would like to stain the material in order to add a different decorative element. This is certainly can change the appearance of the property, but it needs to be remembered that this will also add length of time to the installation process which can result in greater costs.

Cement siding types

There are many different types or cement siding on the market, with one of the more common suppliers being James Hardie. It's a good idea to take a look at several different suppliers and siding types before you come to a final decision so that you can make sure there are no problems with the choice. However, 4 x 8 sheets are the most common siding size, and by choosing this you can practically ensure that the siding will be easy to install, and will do the correct job. This will also cut down on the cost of the job overall since you will not be looking at any specialist siding solutions. The only other thing to bear in mind is whether or not you need to have insulation installed, but this only tends to be needed if you live in a very cold climate or if you are installing siding on an exterior outbuilding such as a garage.

A striking look can be achieved by choosing Cerber Winter Bark siding, available in 6 x 5/16" and 12' x 1/4".and prefinished paint colors, this is a two-tone siding, with a coating process that gives a realistic wood look. This is a low maintenance siding, with a hard finish. Available in the same siding treatment is Cerber old cherry siding. From GAF materials comes wavy fiber cement siding, a perfect replacement siding for older cement siding or asbestos siding shingles. This siding is termite-resistant, asbestos-free, fire-proof, and resistant to freeze-thaw. This can be used for commercial siding applications, and being a paintable siding can be turned to any color.

Siding installation costs

In terms of costs, it can be a good idea to look for a sale taking place at your local building suppliers store, and especially if you can find a wholesale supplier running a sale, since you may be able to get some great discount deals. However, the web will also give you a great choice, and by doing a bit of research you're likely to find some great deals.

Don't forget that cement fiber siding can be an extremely maintenance-free option, since it is so resistant to the weather it can last for many years. It also comes in a wide range of colors and types which means you can transform your house as well as protecting it from the weather. Also take a look at some of the various shapes, including square panels, which can give a unique look to any property. By doing proper research and ensuring your cement siding is installed properly you will have a weather proof coating that may last for years and ensure your property is protected no matter what the elements throw at it.

I am looking at cement siding as well, and you are right that it can be a little bit more expensive, especially when you compare cement siding with vinyl siding. But it really does help to protect your property and so it is probably worthwhile spending a little bit more.
